So my superhero and I have just arrived home from a quick, kid free trip to Seattle. This is the first time we have had kid free time, other than dinner/movie in 3 years. The first time since our second had his first seizure. I was excited for this trip! It was going to be fun, carefree and time to reconnect with my superhero, over the years we have become quite disconnected. Our trip did not quite pan out the way I had mapped it in my mind. I could approach this in two ways, be disappointed that it is not what I had envisioned or be happy that it was a nice break... I am going to be happy that it was a nice break! Something to hold onto and remember for the next 3 years before we do it again!
Sunny Seattle was experiencing a very cold, blustery snowstorm when we arrived. Now in our eyes it was a small flurry but Seattle shut down the schools! It was chilly but certainly nicer than where we came from! Many of the residents guessed that we were from a more Northern climate as they often commented on the fact that we were in hoodies and not parkas. We went with no plan, we were just going to fly by the seat of our pants, this for me is difficult. The first night we ended up seeing some of Seattle's less desirable population as we found ourselves in some seedy neighbourhoods... We figured out what exactly we were doing and where we were going the next day! While figuring it out, we learned that the stop we had been at was not recommended at night...... Not to say it was not an adventure.....
The next day we did the typical Seattle things like the Space Needle and Underground tour! Very cool and of course we had to see them! Priced for the tourist who has to see them for logistical reasons! By this time we were pro's at riding the light rail and figuring out where we were supposed to be. It is still "storming" or in our terms, light snowing.
Our last day there we went for tours at the stadiums, Qwest and Safeco. My superhero was ecstatic to be on an actual NFL field and has already decided that since Seattle is close, he is going to a Sea Hawks game... soon.... It was pretty cool but freezing. This was not typical weather so there was no heat in the buildings and the wind coming off of Puget Sound was unbearable... even for us Northerners! Both of us could have done without the very chatty and long winded tour guide at Safeco... plus neither of us like baseball however, it was cool to be down in the dugouts and near home plate. Later that evening for Nostalgic purposes we went to the first Starbucks and had a hot chocolate... I enjoyed that. Almost as much as watching my superhero in a bib, beat the hell out of a pile of Shrimp and crab in the middle of our table at the Crab Pot... I ate chicken!
It was a fun trip! Seattle is a lovely city and I would like to go back, however I would like to take my boys. Maybe the Superhero can take one of them to a football game. Was it fun and carefree?!?! No and yes, I think we are too old for the carefree stuff. I know I am certainly too anal retentive for that! We had fun though, I just need to remember that we are no longer 20 with no responsibility. As for reconnecting with my superhero, I cannot say that any old issues were resolved. I guess 3 days is not long enough for that and I should not have expected that. We did have a nice time and didn't fight. We created memories, which are happy ones and at the end of the day, the most important ones.
